Here’s a presentation from Roger Schank discussing the future of online training for universities.  Much of the presentation applies to learning in general and should be considered as part of any training or learning solution.  Below the video are some of my takeaways.  As he says, many of these ideas have been said before.  He begins 3:00 into video.

It’s all about memory

Failure is critical to learning

The mind is an expectation device

Memory is the issue in learning…not facts

If training is like school…it doesn’t work

Learning is driven by goals

We don’t learn when something conforms exactly to our expectations

If you’re not curious…you’re not going to learn

Learning is revisions of expectations of memory

We learn by copying things that interest us

If something is emotional…you’ll remember

If you don’t remember something, you didn’t learn it

If you’re not curious, you’re not going to learn

Teaching is good advice delivered just in time

We learn through experiences
